What it is

Hoʻoponopono means to make right — to set in order what has gone crooked. Kāhealani studied it under Aunty Margaret Machado and in the lineage of Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, and she is careful about how it is described: it is a practice of restoration, not a technique for getting something.

Kāhealani names this one “I ʻike ke ala naʻau pono” — that the path of the right naʻau be known. The naʻau is the gut: in Hawaiian thought it is where feeling and conscience sit, not the head. Hoʻoponopono is the practice that sets it back in order.
